Every Thing Good Is on the Highway

by David Starkey

—Emerson

Willie Nelson and tumbleweeds,

No Passing signs and copses

of willow trees, barns in twilight

and soybean fields, pumpkins

for sale—a dollar a piece—bales

of still green hay, barbed wire

and mobile homes, saguaro cactus

and fireworks stores, dust storms

and flash floods, moose crossings

and railroad crossings and empty

crossroads and traffic lights,

a hundred thousand thousand

gas stations, derelict souvenir

stands and clouds of deer

flies and twenty-five miles

of barrenness, telephone poles

and grain silos and the insomniac

bliss of late August at midnight—

the acid swirl of Northern lights

when the equinoctial spirit

dance teases toward asphalt,

the solar wind never quite

touching us with its lovely

otherworldly hues: green

and pink and red and, lastly, blue.

“Cutting It Loose” originally appeared in Salt and Cutting It Loose.
